The Piano World of Maura Vazakas

Maura Vazakas was born and raised in New York. She started taking piano lessons at the age of 8 after learning that her best friend was studying piano. Maura took to the piano like it was an extension of her hands. After her first piano teacher, Rose Tanner (a graduate of the Juilliard School) realized that Maura’s talent needed the best instruction, she advised her family to have her audition for the Juilliard School Preparatory Division. Maura was not only accepted immediately, but was awarded an Honorary Scholarship.

There she studied Music Theory with Ms. Goldstein, Violin/Piano ensemble with Jane Wentworth, and Principal piano study with Jane Carlson. After four years of study at Juilliard, Maura attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music where she studied with Emil Danenberg (who later went on to become Dean of the Conservatory, then president of Oberlin College) and received a Bachelor of Music degree. Her graduating piano recital was very successful. After turning down many graduate school acceptances, Maura was offered a Class Piano Teaching Assistantship at University of Michigan School of Music.
